Introduction
Hi Everyone!
My name is Catherine Cerbino. I graduated from Mount Saint Mary's College in Newburgh, NY in 2022 with my Bachelors degree in English, and certifications in Elementary Education and Special Education! After I graduated I was a substitute teacher in the Marlboro School District for one year and a permanent substitute for the Arlington Central School District my second year out of college. I currently am a first year teacher in the Beacon City School District. I am a 6th and 7th grade Technology teacher, where I mostly teach STEM as well as computer skills. This was not a position I ever saw myself in, however over the course of the year I have fallen in love with teaching in a middle school. In August I was very nervous to teach middle school as I really had no experience in it at all, but now I could see myself doing it for the rest of my career!
Some of my career goals include getting tenured in the school district I work at (because I love it so much), create a safe, respectful, and growth-focused classroom culture, and become a mentor teacher one day. I want to become a mentor teacher one day because I really have learned so much from mine this year, and she has created a safe space for me to go to with any question or problem I may be having, both in the classroom and outside of it! She has truly made my first year so much easier.
I am choosing to pursue this masters degree because I want to learn how to design more engaging, standards aligned, and effective lessons. I also chose this because I want to learn better strategies to differentiate instruction and support diverse learners. Overall, I want this degree to help me become a better teacher!
When I am not teaching I love to be productive. I love to exercise in any way. some of my favorite ways include playing volleyball in my adult league, going to the gym, going for hikes, or playing pickleball on the weekends! I also love to read, mostly romance novels, and I love to spend time with my family and friends!
Some of my learning goals for this course include: learning how to use more digital tools to engage students in the classroom, how to design instruction using new literacies, and learn strategies on how to help students learn how to be ethical producers of media. My students are all very attached to their technology, and since they are in middle school they are constantly on social media, and with that comes the responsibility of being safe and respectful online. As a technology teacher, digital citizenship is a major topic I cover in my classroom, so I feel as though these goals would help me to learn how to successfully teach my students how to prepare for the digital world in a safe way. I would also love to learn how to incorporate my degree in English into my job as a technology teacher, I have some ideas, but I would to learn effective ways to do it. Overall, I am very excited to learn more about New Media and Literacies, I never really got to take a class like this in college and I feel as though it will be very beneficial for me as Technology teacher.
The meme I chose describes my classroom perfectly right now as we are closing out the school year and my students are very checked out!

Hi Catherine! Welcome to NMNL! I look forward to the ways this class might help you engage students in meaningful tech uses!
